Cam sành means "terracotta orange" in Vietnamese, although the fruit is more similar to a mandarin or tangerine. The fruit is easily identified by its thick rind, which is usually bright green in color, although the rind may also be part green, part orange, or completely orange. Its pulp is orange, dark in color and sweet in taste. This is the most popular orange variety in Vietnam.

In most horticultural literature, the tree is known as the "king tangerine" or "king tangerine." Scions for grafting are available through the University of California Citrus Clonal Conservation Program. A notable difference is that in temperate climates, when ripe, the fruit turns bright orange due to cold temperatures.

It is one of the many citrus fruits in the region. These include the closely related yellow cam canh and red to yellow cam bo ha citrus-yuzu hybrids; the orange spring or sen, the yellow white seed and the pink red-orange-mandarin hybrid or "king mandarin" (C. reticulata × C. sinensis); and at least three non-hybrid citrus (C. reticulata) varieties. The term "wangguanguan" is also sometimes applied to cam sành itself.
