Perlite is a siliceous volcanic glass produced by volcanic eruptions and is named for its unique concentric cracks that resemble pearls. Perlite minerals include perlite, obsidian and rosinite. Perlite is heated to high temperatures and expands into a new lightweight material. It has the characteristics of non-toxic, odorless, fireproof, heat insulation, sound absorption, low thermal conductivity, stable chemical properties, and wide applicable temperature range.
Function:
Perlite is a soilless growing medium that has been helping to increase the aeration of soil mixes for many years. It is made from inflated volcanic glass, an extremely light and porous material. Due to its porosity, it has one of the best oxygen retention levels of any growing medium.
Its weight can be a disadvantage in some hydroponic systems, where the water interacts directly with the growing medium, causing it to move and be washed away. For this reason, perlite is rarely used alone—it’s often mixed with coir, soil, or vermiculite;
