Carbide
Calcium carbide (CaC2) is a key inorganic compound known in its industrial form as a gray-black bulk material that often appears purple or gray in cross-section. When exposed to water, it reacts violently, producing acetylene gas and releasing heat. It has two key uses: as a source of acetylene gas for welding, cutting and fuel, and as a feedstock for organic synthesis of chemicals such as vinyl chloride and synthetic resins.
