Vermiculite is used in thousands of applications such as potting soil, lightweight concrete, fire-resistant building materials, intumescent applications, as a UN-approved safe transport packaging material for hazardous liquids, as a thickener in paints and coatings, and more recently as an Nanocomposites, coatings and barrier applications. When heated, vermiculite has the unusual property of exfoliating or expanding into worm-like fragments (the vermiculite's name comes from the Latin word "vermiculare" - breeding worm). This exfoliation property, which is the basis for the mineral's commercial use, is the result of mechanical separation between the layers, and the rapid conversion of contained moisture to steam. Commercial grades have 8 to 12 times more bulk, but individual flakes can shed as much as 30 times. A color change will occur during expansion, depending on the composition of the vermiculite and the temperature of the furnace.
