The use of potassium chloride in drilling
Potassium chloride is a salt composed of potassium and chlorine. It is the most important salt that consumes more potassium. It (KCl) is a soluble salt that is a very effective shale stabilizer when drilling water-sensitive clays and shale. Inhibition is provided by ion exchange; potassium chloride ions enter between the individual clay platelets in the shale, holding them together, eliminating the ingress of water in the drilling fluid. KCl powder is a high-purity, dry, crystalline inorganic salt used to form clear brine for well workover and completion operations requiring densities of 8.4 to 9.7 lb/gal (1007 to 1162 kg/m3)
