Canola biodiesel from virgin oil is more expensive to produce than standard diesel because of the cost of growing, crushing and refining canola biodiesel, so diesel is often made from used oil. Rapeseed oil is the oil of choice for biodiesel production in most of Europe, accounting for about 80% of the feedstock, partly because it yields more oil per unit of land compared to other sources such as soybeans, but mainly because Canola oil has a significantly lower gel point than most other vegetable oils. Rapeseed is currently grown using high levels of nitrogen-containing fertilizers, the production of which produces N2O. It is estimated that 3-5% of the nitrogen supplied as rapeseed fertilizer is converted to N2O.
