Anhydrous borax, also known as sodium tetraborate, has an α-orthorhombic crystal system and a melting point of 742.5°C. Density 2.28, β orthorhombic melting point 664 ℃. Density 2.75, white crystal or colorless glass crystal, strong hygroscopicity, easily soluble in water and glycerin, slowly soluble in methanol, can form a solution with a concentration of 13-16%, the aqueous solution is weakly alkaline, insoluble in alcohol . A. Household items
Borax is used in a variety of household laundry and cleaning products. Some tooth bleaching formulas also contain borax.
B. buffer zone
Sodium borate is used in biochemical and chemical laboratories to prepare buffers, for example for DNA gel electrophoresis, such as TBE or the newer SB buffer or BBS (borate buffered saline) during coating. Borate buffer (typically pH 8) is also used as a preferential equilibration solution in DMP-based crosslinking reactions.
C. Flux
A mixture of borax and ammonium chloride is used as a flux when welding steel. It lowers the melting point of unwanted iron oxide (scale) allowing it to drain away. Borax is also mixed with water and used as a flux when soldering jewelry metals such as gold or silver. It allows molten solder to flow evenly over problematic joints. Borax is also a good flux for "pre-tinning" tungsten and zinc - making tungsten solderable.
