Brassica napus, also known as oilseed rape, oilseed rape, oilseed rape (and, in the case of a specific cultivar group, oilseed rape), is a bright yellow flowering member of the cruciferous family (mustard or cabbage family). Rapeseed oil is grown primarily for its oil-rich seeds, the world's third-largest source of vegetable oil.

Rapeseed oil is used as diesel fuel, either as biodiesel, directly in heated fuel systems, or blended with petroleum distillates to power motor vehicles. Biodiesel can be used in new engines in pure form without damaging the engine, and is often blended with fossil fuel diesel at 2 to 20 percent biodiesel.

Rapeseed-derived biodiesel from new oil is more expensive to produce than standard diesel fuel due to the cost of growing, crushing, and refining canola biodiesel, which is often made from waste oil. Rapeseed oil is the oil of choice for biodiesel production in much of Europe, accounting for about 80% of the feedstock, partly because rapeseed produces more oil per unit of land area than other oil sources such as soybeans, but mainly because Canola oil has a significantly lower gel point than most other vegetable oils.

Rapeseed is currently grown using high levels of nitrogen-containing fertilizers, and the production of these fertilizers generates N2O. It is estimated that 3-5% of the nitrogen supplied as rapeseed fertilizer is converted to N2O.
