Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is a vine in the flowering plant family Cucurbitaceae. The species has long been believed to have originated in southern Africa, but this was based on an incorrect synonym for the South African species with cultivated watermelon by LH Bailey (1930).

The error became apparent through DNA comparisons of the cultivated watermelon material that Linnaeus had seen and named with the holotype of the South African species.
