Structure of our carbon fiber tubes

The first three fiber orientations

0° direction

If the part is only loaded in one direction, it is ideal to have all fibers oriented in that direction. Pultruded rods and tubes are examples of parts that contain only 0° fibers

90° direction

As mentioned, 90° plies are often added to the tube to make it more resistant to buckling and crushing. High concentrations of 90° or "annular" layers can also be found in pressure vessels

+/- 45° orientation

The 45° layer has different uses depending on the application. You will almost always see +45° next to -45° layers. This is to keep the laminate "balanced" and avoid strong twisting when loaded.
