Modacrylic fiber is a man-made fiber in which the fiber-forming substance is any long-chain synthetic polymer consisting of less than 85% but at least 35% by weight of acrylonitrile units. (-CH2CH[CN]-)x. Modacrylic is a synthetic copolymer. Modacrylic is inherently flame retardant. Although it will burn when it comes in direct contact with a flame, it will not melt or drip and will self-extinguish when the flame is removed. Modacrylic is widely used in high-performance protective clothing, such as firefighting suits, because of the combination of flame retardancy and other desirable textile properties such as durability and good hand. Modacrylic is soft, strong, stretchy and dimensionally stable. They are easy to dye, have good iron and shape retention, and dry quickly. They have excellent resistance to chemicals and solvents, are not attacked by moths or mold, and are non-allergenic. Their uses include clothing linings, fur coats, paint roller covers, spreading rugs, rugs and work clothes, and hair in wigs.

Modacrylic fibers have a low softening temperature, so they can be stretched, embossed and molded into special shapes. Fibers with controlled thermal shrinkage capabilities can be produced. When fibers of different shrinkage are mixed on the surface of the fleece, heating produces fibers of different lengths, creating a surface similar to natural fur.
