1. Characteristics of tungsten tube.
Tungsten metal is silvery white, shiny, and does not occur naturally (abundance in the earth's crust is 1 ppm). It is found in the ore wolframite, a tungstate of iron and manganese, (FeMn)WO4, which is converted to trioxide, which is then reduced to the metal by hydrogen reduction (carbon cannot be used because a very stable carbide would be produced). Tungsten metal is relatively inert and resistant to attack by oxygen, acids and alkalis, but will react with molten oxidizing alkali media. It has the highest melting point of all metals, and when pure, it can be processed relatively easily; however, the presence of impurities makes tungsten extremely brittle and therefore difficult to manufacture.
Tungsten's high melting point makes it suitable for use as electrical filament (such as light bulbs). It is also the basis for a range of alloys containing tungsten, copper and nickel, which are used in radiation shielding because they are 50% denser compared to lead. Tungsten and its alloys are also used in military applications (such as armor and artillery shells) and as balancing materials. Tungsten carbide powder (with the possible addition of titanium carbide and tantalum carbide) is compressed and sintered together with nickel or cobalt powder to produce cemented carbide. These products are used in place of high-speed steel to form the tips of cutting and drilling tools, or for parts that require heavy use.
