1. Characteristics of tungsten tube.
Tungsten metal is shiny, silvery white, and does not occur naturally (1 ppm in the earth's crust). It is found in the ore wolframite, a tungstate of iron and manganese, (FeMn)WO4, which is converted to the trioxide, which is then reduced to the metal by hydrogen reduction (carbon cannot be used because very stable carbides are produced). Tungsten metal is relatively inert and resistant to attack by oxygen, acids and bases, but it will react with molten oxidizing base media. It has the highest melting point of all metals and, if pure, is relatively easy to work with; however, the presence of impurities makes tungsten extremely brittle, making it difficult to manufacture.
Tungsten's high melting point makes it suitable for use as an electric filament such as a light bulb. It is also the basis for a range of tungsten, copper and nickel alloys used in radiation shielding due to their 50% increase in density compared to lead. Tungsten and its alloys are also used in military applications such as armor and artillery shells, as well as balancing materials. Tungsten carbide powder (with the possible addition of titanium carbide and tantalum carbide) is compressed and sintered with nickel or cobalt powder to produce cemented carbide. These products are used in place of high-speed steel to make the tips of cutting and drilling tools, or for parts that require heavy use.
