Formaldehyde (systematic name formaldehyde) is a naturally occurring organic compound with the chemical formula CHO (H−CHO). It is the simplest aldehyde (R−CHO).

Formaldehyde is more complex than many simple carbon compounds because it takes several different forms. Formaldehyde is a colorless gas with a unique pungent odor. After condensation, the gas is converted into various other forms of formaldehyde (with different chemical formulas) that are more useful. One derivative is the cyclic trimer trimerformaldehyde (1,3,5-trioxane), which has the chemical formula (CH2O)3. There is also a linear polymer called paraformaldehyde. These compounds have similar chemical properties and are often used interchangeably.

When formaldehyde is dissolved in water, it also forms a hydrate, methanediol, whose molecular formula is H2C(OH)2. The compound also equilibrates with various oligomers (short polymers), depending on concentration and temperature. A saturated aqueous solution with a formaldehyde content of approximately 40% (volume) or 37% (mass) is called "100% formalin". A small amount of stabilizer, such as methanol, is often added to inhibit oxidation and polymerization. In addition to various metallic impurities, typical commercial grade formalin may contain 10-12% methanol. "Formaldehyde" was first used as a generic trademark in 1893, formerly known as "formalin."

Products derived from formaldehyde include urea-formaldehyde resins, melamine resins, phenol-formaldehyde resins, polyacetal plastics, 1,4-butanediol and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate. The textile industry uses formaldehyde-based resins as finishing agents to make fabrics wrinkle-resistant.

When treated with phenol, urea, or melamine, formaldehyde produces hard thermosetting phenol-formaldehyde resins, urea-formaldehyde resins, and melamine resins, respectively. These polymers are permanent adhesives commonly used in plywood and carpet. Used as a wet-strength resin added to toilet paper products such as facial tissue, napkins, and roll towels. They can also be foamed to create insulation, or cast into molded products.

Formaldehyde is also a precursor to polyfunctional alcohols such as pentaerythritol, which is used in the manufacture of paints and explosives.
