Physical and Chemical Properties:
Formaldehyde (systematic name Formaldehyde) is a naturally occurring organic compound with the molecular formula CH2O (H−CHO). It is the simplest aldehyde (R−CHO).Formaldehyde is more complex than many simple carbon compounds because it exists in several different forms. As a gas, formaldehyde is colorless, with a characteristic pungent, pungent odor. When condensed, the gas is converted to various other forms of formaldehyde (with different chemical formulas) that are more useful. One derivative is cyclic paraformaldehyde (1,3,5-trioxane) with the molecular formula (CH2O)3. There is also a linear polymer called paraformaldehyde. These compounds have similar chemical properties and are often used interchangeably.
When dissolved in water, formaldehyde also forms the hydrate methylene glycol, which has the molecular formula H2C(OH)2. This compound also exists in equilibrium with various oligomers (short polymers), depending on concentration and temperature. A saturated aqueous solution containing approximately 40% (volume) or 37% (mass) of formaldehyde is called "100% formalin". A small amount of stabilizer, such as methanol, is usually added to inhibit oxidation and polymerization. Typical commercial grade formalin may contain 10–12% methanol in addition to various metallic impurities. "Formaldehyde" was first used as a generic trademark in 1893, and the previous trade name was "formalin".

Products derived from formaldehyde include urea-formaldehyde resins, melamine resins, phenolic resins, acetal, 1,4-butanediol, and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate. The textile industry uses formaldehyde-based resins as finishes to make fabrics wrinkle-resistant.
When treated with phenol, urea, or melamine, formaldehyde produces hard thermosetting phenolic, urea, and melamine resins, respectively. These polymers are commonly used permanent adhesives in plywood and carpet. Used as a wet strength resin for toilet paper products such as facial tissues, napkins, roll towels, etc. They can also be foamed into insulation, or cast into molded products.
Formaldehyde is also a precursor to polyfunctional alcohols such as pentaerythritol, which is used to make paints.
