ADTM Penetration Grade 60/70 is a semi-hard penetration grade bitumen used as a paving grade bitumen suitable for road construction and repair and also for the production of asphalt pavements with the following specifications. This grade of asphalt is mainly used in the manufacture of hot mix asphalt for base and wear layers. Asphalt 60/70 is the most commonly used asphalt grade and the base material for all other asphalt products.

Asphalt is an oil-based substance. It is a semi-solid hydrocarbon product made by removing lighter fractions such as liquefied petroleum gas, gasoline and diesel from heavy crude oil during the refining process. Hence, it is rightly called refined asphalt. In North America, asphalt is often referred to as "asphalt cement" or "asphalt". Elsewhere, "asphalt" refers to a mixture of pebbles, sand, filler and bitumen, used as a paving material. The bituminous mixture contains about 5% bitumen. At ambient temperature, bitumen is a stable semi-solid substance.

The vast majority of refined bitumen is used in construction: primarily as an ingredient in products for paving and roofing applications. Asphalt is produced to specifications based on end-use requirements. This can be achieved through refining processes or blending.

It is estimated that the current world usage of bitumen is about 102 million tons per year. About 85% of the asphalt produced is used as a binder for road asphalt. It is also used in other paved areas such as airport runways, parking lots and sidewalks.

Typically, the production of bitumen involves mixing sand, gravel and crushed stone with bitumen as a binder. Other materials, such as polymers, can be added to asphalt to change its properties depending on the final intended application of the asphalt.
  
Another 10% of global bitumen production is used in roofing applications, where its waterproofing qualities are at a premium.

The remaining 5% of bitumen is primarily used for sealing and insulating purposes in various building materials, such as pipe coatings, carpet tile backing, and paints.

Petroleum Asphalt 60/70 & 80/100

Petroleum bitumen is often confused with tar. While pitch and coal tar are equally black and viscous, they are distinct substances in origin, chemical composition, and properties. Coal tar is produced by heating coal to extremely high temperatures and is a by-product of gas and coke production. It was widely used as a binder for road asphalt at the beginning of the last century, but was later replaced by refined asphalt.

Bitumen is also sometimes confused with petroleum bitumen, which, although also derived from crude oil, is a substance produced by a different process than refining bitumen. Petroleum bitumen is the residue produced by extreme heat treatment or "cracking" of petroleum fractions. Therefore, their properties and chemical composition are completely different from asphalt.

Natural bitumen, sometimes referred to as natural bitumen, rock bitumen, lake bitumen, or oil sands, has been used as a binder, sealant, and waterproofing agent for over 8,000 years. But it only occurs in small amounts and its properties are very different from refined asphalt.

Bitumen is produced from selected crude oils through a fractionation process. The crude oil is heated to a temperature between 300 and 350 degrees Celsius and sent to a distillation column, where the lightest fractions of the crude oil are separated from the heavier fractions by evaporation and remain liquid.

The higher boiling fractions are then withdrawn through a heat exchanger and entered into a vacuum distillation column. This process produces a "short residue" that is used to make several grades of asphalt. The pressure and temperature conditions during the vacuum process will determine the hardness of the short slag and thus the grade of asphalt produced. Short residues can be further modified by "air blowing", in which air is passed through the residue at a temperature of 250-300 degrees Celsius.

What is Asphalt 60/70?

Bitumen 60/70 has the highest boiling, heaviest and most polar fraction from vacuum distillation of crude oil. Bitumen 60 70 consists of asphaltenes and maltose. The heavy insoluble asphaltene molecules give the bitumen a 60/70 bulk and softening point, while the maltose imparts oiliness and makes the bitumen elastic. Asphaltene molecules are soluble in aromatic solvents such as toluene, but not in heptane. Maltose is a heptane-soluble molecule with low aroma.

Softening point and penetration of bitumen 60/70

The permeable grade bitumen offered by ATDM is pure petroleum grade bitumen made by passing hot air through a vacuum bottom. Bitumen provided by ATDM is produced from the residue of crude oil cracking and dehydrocarbonation. Permeability grade asphalt 60/70 has a permeability between 60 and 70 decimm and a softening point between 48 and 52C. Penetrating grade bitumen 60/70 is thermoplastic, similar to synthetic resin materials, softens when heated and hardens when cooled. This grade of bitumen 60/70 has a very strong viscosity compared to other grades.
