The production of fused silica involves the electrofusion of high-purity crystalline silica

A solid substance is formed whose properties are enhanced due to the process. Fused silica is purer and has a lower specific gravity and a lower coefficient of linear thermal expansion than crystalline silica.

Due to its unique properties, fused silica is used in a range of highly specialized industrial applications. These can be broadly grouped into three categories: refractory applications, molding applications and investment casting applications.
