1. Characteristics of tungsten foil.
Tungsten metal is lustrous, silvery white, and not naturally occurring (it is present in the earth's crust at 1 ppm). It is found in the ore wolframite, a tungstate of iron and manganese, (FeMn)WO4, which is converted to trioxides, which are then reduced to metals by reduction of hydrogen (carbon cannot be used because very stable carbides are produced). Tungsten metal is relatively inert and resistant to attack by oxygen, acids and bases, but it will react with molten oxidizing alkaline media. It has the highest melting point of all metals, and if pure, it can be processed relatively easily; however, the presence of impurities makes tungsten extremely brittle, making it difficult to manufacture.
Tungsten is a relatively rare metal. It is the most difficult metal to melt, with a melting point of 3410. The density of tungsten products is 19.3g/cm3.
